Principal’s Report: Mr. Blake
- Grateful for where we are today after the tough covid restricted years. We are back to having events like field day, 5th grade show and now a family picnic too! We have an incredible community that reminds Mr. Blake of the strength of our school.
- A prior Washington student from 45 years ago visited the school and it was interesting to see his reaction almost like a little kid remembering his old teachers/classrooms that shaped his Washington Elementary years.
- These are amazing years for our kids and Mr. Blake gives credit to the staff who work hard to create a sense of community at Washington. Our staff is united on what is best for our kids.
- Big thanks to the PTO and parents for getting us back to what we used to be.
- Cautions us to be leery of the impact of social media on these young kids. In 3rd grade, we see a transition where kids start to do thing to impress others and fit in.
- The 5th graders had a fun week of events.
- Mr. Blake said goodbye and thanks to the 5th grade families that are leaving Washington. But we know we will see everyone again.
- Our school has a tradition of high school seniors coming back and visiting the school before they graduate.
- Lastly, we are pleased to report that Promethean boards will be in every classroom for the start of school next year! Thank you PTO.

- Our teachers do their best to prepare our children for their assessments/testing so they are less stressed. In addition to standardized testing results, our parent/teacher conferences and report cards are a good time to review your child’s progress.
- Last Friday was Art Day and the parents and students walked to hallways viewing their art and doing a fun scavenger hunt. Mrs. Viaud did an amazing job of turning the school into a children’s art museum.
- The students’ musical performances and 5th grade play are coming up and we are very grateful for our arts and music program.
- Makerspace is tonight 5/14 – Mrs. Flanagan and Mrs. T are running the event.
Special Guests: Eisenhower Middle School Principal (Mr. Faenhdrick) and their PTO President (Emily Adler)

- School supplies – no need to stress about buying in advance, each teacher will have their own list.
- Canteen is a fun hang out for the kids and a great way for parents to get involved.

- Fairview is more intimate for our school and not multiple schools at the same time.
- The deposit and waiver forms are due so please return as soon as possible if you have not already done so.
- The parent chaperones bunk with kids and teachers have connected bunks.
- Teachers are meeting one period a day to collaborate in making the student teams for the upcoming school year. Assignments will be released in August.
- The students are assigned their math placement and then choose their electives such as, foreign language, music (band, strings, choir).
- The year is broken down into trimesters with A and B days so the students can explore a lot of different classes.
- There are no before school activities at Eisenhower but there are a lot of after school activities. We encourage kids to get involved in the after-school clubs to get to know more kids. These offerings will become available the end of Sept/early October.
- There is a bagel meet up at the end of August where the 6th graders go to their homeroom and meet the other homeroom students and learn how to use their locker. Devices such as phones, smart watches etc. must stay in the locker.

- The school offers subscription busing if you live 2+ miles from the school.

Principal’s Report: Mr. Blake
- We are now getting out of school two days earlier than expected. Last day will be Thursday June 20th. There will be minimum days on June 18, 19 and 20.
- We had a very successful parents’ night out at Bottagra.
- Last Thursday, a production team from NYC did a feature at our school for Magna Math.
- The two classrooms that were video were: Marrero’s first grade and Mrs. Karsos’s fifth grade. Mr. Blake is so proud of the Washington Staff and students.
- Magna Math is the software program we are now using that has replaced IXL. It is more engaging and interactive. It can assess the students’ abilities in real time and evaluate strengths and weaknesses to create customized learning paths. This technology provides data to tell us specifically where your child is doing well and where they need more help.
- We are moving away from memorization to thinking/problem solving and collaboration. Which results in creative and flexible thinkers.
- Washington is getting a lot of visitors from surrounding schools who want to see how we educate. We are proud to be a leader.
- Ascrizzi, our Instructional Coach, is tremendous to our curriculum and supporting our teachers. We strive to treat every child as an individual.
- We had a fun time at the Harlem Wizards Basketball Event! A Washington family won the 50/50 raffle and very generously handed Mr. Blake approx. $450 to put toward our Promethean Board purchases.
Presidents’ Report:
- Follow up to solar eclipse – we are collecting the glasses to be shipped to South America in preparation for their solar eclipse in October. Please place in the box in the front of the school – Erin Christman is spear heading this effort and will pick up on Friday.

- We have some special thank you’s from the past month:
- Read-A-Thon - Daneen Francini & Paula Cestaro for doing a wonderful job organizing the Read-A-Thon this year.
- Our Spring Fling chairs, Sarir Silver, Jess Fillis and Nikki Karras for all of their hard work planning and executing the Spring Fling. It was super fun and incredibly successful! If you are a silent auction winner, the faculty member associated with your prize will reach out to you soon! Thank you to Mr. Blake for attending.
- A huge thank you to Mr. Blake, Mrs. Lutzer, Mrs. Wogisch, Ms. Danon, and Ms. Miller for being such great sports and participating in the Washington Wizards game last week. Volunteers from all 4 elementary schools worked together to pull off an amazing night for the kids and to benefit the PTO. We plan to hold this awesome event again next year but need more help. Please see any of the PTO board members to sign up in advance to volunteer.

Treasurer: Review of February 2024 Financial Statement
- Starting Balance = $108,277.87
- Total Income = $4,240
- Income from Spring Fling, Superbowl fundraiser, Promethean Board fundraising.
- Total Expenses = $11,144.09
- Expenses from the holiday store, pizza/bagel/Jersey Mikes lunches, teacher appreciation lunch, Washington family picnic, Media center, science fair, game night.

Principal’s Report:
- Blake provided video examples of things kids have done with Promethean Boards.
- We had a successful installation of Promethean Boards over February break.
- We are making great progress and prioritizing the classrooms first and then adding the specialists (i.e., math, music, reading teachers) which will be the gravy on top.
- Magna Math – Production team coming April 4th for professional video shoot at our school.
- Proud of our students and their unique artwork throughout the school. We believe in individual expression, and you will never see two pieces that are the same.
- Ongoing professional development for our teachers. Mrs. Ascrizzi, our Instructional Coach, meets with our teachers all the time to make sure they are up to speed on curriculum.
- Health Barn hosting an upcoming assembly discussing the importance of nutritious food choices.
- School security drills: The state of NJ requires one fire drill and one school security drill per month.
- Security drills are active shooter, lock down, evacuation and shelter in place. We believe in transparency and will always send out an email notification when these drills have occurred to help protect your children’s emotional health.
- These drills are done for our physical safety, and it is a necessary evil that we be prepared. It’s sad, but true, that these drills have become routine for many of the kids.
- If anyone’s child/children struggle with these drills, please reach out to Mr. Blake.
- The terminology that we use to explain the security drills is very simple especially for the younger grades.
- Blake tells the kids we are either having inside drills or outside drills.
- We go outside when something bad is going on inside the building – i.e., fire.
- We stay inside when something bad is going on outside the building.
- As a nation, we are rethinking school shootings and what we need to do about it. We are trying to do a better job of identifying the signs of people/children who may be a threat and include them in the school community and try to rehabilitate them.
- Unfortunately, there are a lot of kids with mental health issues.
- Four years ago, about this time in March 2020, we shut down the schools due to the COVID pandemic and we are still recovering from PTSD as a country.
- Lynch, our school Guidance Counselor, is here to help our children with their mental health in hopes that if we help kids struggling when they are young, they do not become a treat.
Presidents’ Report:
- Installation of Promethean Boards happened over February break and every grade received at least one. Mrs. Ramirez’s kindergarten class, all 1st grade teachers, Mrs. Lutzer and Mrs. Wogish for 2nd grade, one rotating on a cart for 3rd grade, all 4th and 5th grade rotate with the math teacher.

Principal’s Report: Mr. Blake (including presentations by Mrs. Marrero and Miss Flanagan)
- Promethean Board – phase 1, we provided Miss Flanagan’s technology room with a demo board. We also purchased one board and the first-grade teachers took the lead and learned how to use it. The first-grade teachers have made tremendous use of this learning tool and share among their classrooms.
- Marrero and 4 first-grade students provided a demonstration. The feedback from the kids was: you can use the pen to draw and make the story happen, you can do math, you can use your finger to touch the screen and move things around on the board. You can read and highlight things and it’s really fun to do.
- Marrero’s presentation and feedback: the board is an interactive display; you can touch it and manipulate and move things around. It’s very visually appealing. It’s a mix of a computer, giant iPad and white board together. There are 20 touch points on the screen so multiple students can use at same time. Use of the Promethean Board does not change our individual paper/pen learning, it just adds another tool to make group learning more interactive.
- Miss Flanagan illustrated how the Promethean board works and fielded questions from PTO members. This tool allows us to share the screen with other classrooms through google classroom. It is secure, no cameras. This is a supplement to learning and we will still have paper/pen learning. Promethean did offer training to the district; however, we found unnecessary at this time as the tool is very user friendly.
- Blake’s feedback – the roll-out plans is to purchase boards and complete at grade level, i.e., finish with 1st grade, then move onto primary grades, then reading and math specialists. The goal is to have in all classrooms by end of next year. Mr. Blake thanked the PTO for their generosity and support in helping us meet our goals.
- Rule of thumb for going outside in winter – 32 degrees and above we generally go outside for recess. However, if it is 32 degrees and super gray and windy, we may stay in. Mr. Blake believes in fresh air and outdoor education. He encourages parents to have their kids prepared with appropriate layers and to please label their clothing. We already have a HUGE lost and found collection.
- Sad news – our school secretary lost her husband over the weekend. She lives here in Wyckoff. Mr. Blake feels it is important to build a feeling of family and he presses upon the students three things: respect, kindness, and inclusion. The PTO sent flowers to the funeral home and will also be providing gift card for meals.
Presidents’ Report: Cori Neuhaus
- Promethean Boards slide show was presented. See attached link.
- Goal is to provide each of our classrooms with a board within the next 2 years. PTO fundraising money will be going toward this goal.
- We will be sending out a link so the PTO membership can vote and we can better gage interest in the Promethean Board funding.
- Currently as discussed by Mr. Blake, Miss Flanagan has a board in her technology room and the first-grade teachers share a board.
- Sicomac Elementary School is fully outfitted with Promethean boards in each classroom (due to generous donations), Lincoln has 6-8 boards, Coolidge has 3 boards and Washington has 2 boards. At Washington, we want to be a leader in the district and be equipped with the latest technology.
- To meet our goal of providing each of our 20 classrooms with a board, we need approximately $95k-$100k. We may get more support from the district. We are waiting for Dr. Postman to get back to us on what financial support the district will provide.
- We are accepting donations and sponsorship opportunities are available. If you want to support this goal, please reach out directly to the PTO.
- Theme Day update: we are working to come up with an alternative experience that will be fun but with less classroom disruption. In March, we will have something exciting planned. Once we have more details, we will share with everyone. Parent volunteers will be able to get involved in some capacity.
- Reminder: Building Use Forms need to be submitted for PTO sponsored events at least 30 days prior. Please contact our Secretary, Bonnie Ufferfilge at [email protected].
- Special thanks to the Holiday Store committee chairs - Melissa Shanley, Michele Van Slooten, and Sophie Jang. It was a great fun event for the kids.
- Thank you to our hospitality committee and everyone who donated snacks/supplies to stock the teacher’s lounge!

Principal's Report: Mr. Blake
Removal of masks on March 7th made it a very special day in the school. The teachers are working with the children to have them show empathy for kids who choose to wear or not wear masks - it's everyone's individual choice. The children are being flagged for academic needs, however, they are finding that the social & emotional needs of kids need to be closely monitored. The younger grades are seeing more conflict, so interactive modeling is helping them to learn conflict resolution.
Mr. Blake shared the news that Jack Hourihan, class of 2011, passed away recently of brain cancer. We want to support the Hourihan family as strongly as possible through our school community.
